Had this came through on one of the news letters I get, would anyone happen to knwo when this update occured?-
GOOGLE UPDATE EFFECTS WEB BUSINESS
Shortly after the recent Google update last week many web publishers and internet based businesses have complained of lost earnings as a result of altercations to the infamous Google ranking algorithm, PageRank(tm).
Will.Spencer : .Almost immediately we noticed a decline in traffic and a noticeable reduction in revenue. We are predicting a decline of around 24% in total sales over the previous calender month - for us the update is extremely serious .
In order to provide relevant and up-to-date results Google periodically updates content in its database by "crawling" the web itself. However in the last update Google has made changes to the way it ranks sites, in particular the PageRank(tm) algorithm, Google's own internal measure of a sites importance. For many businesses the update has meant their site no longer appears as high as it did previously in search engine results, which has led to a decrease in derived traffic and thus internet sales.
i got a nice jump from PR1/PR2 to PR6 on 4 sites i SEO'ed only last week, not complaining. just hoping the obvious glitch isn't sorted too soon.
Why do people say they have a 'PR4 site', or whatever? Different pages on the same site can have a range of different PRs.
cos the general understanding of site in this case is the index page.
and in my case of the 4 PR6's all sites are just the one page. they were never meant to be anything special, just 4 domains that were there and might as well have something SEO'ed content on them rather than nothing.

post a url :) - I have not checked when updates went through anythign up to a 4 was pretty easy to acheive getting over that mark is proving difficult.
Ahh OK, so Pandemos is now a PR4 site then. Took it long enough :P

Same as that. 4 seems ok anything else seems difficult.
No idea about PR, but my search engine hits from all search engines have gone through the roof this month - getting shed load of hits on things like "bondage", "bdsm" as well as some of the more specific terms
I didn't think PR actually affected your position for search terms

I don't think it does, what I do know is that if I had pages with pr6 I would be leasing text link space to people, theres cerntainly enough people out there that buy such spots.
Geezer, I have a Google document I picked up from a trade show I will see if there is anything re PR and fire it over to you.

Yeah I've always thought of PR as bragging rights but not actually meaning anything. I don't even check my PR.
I have some pages with high PR, but they don't get any traffic, so I wonder what use PR really is.

It's good if you want to sell them to newbies who will think it's great to have a site with PR6 :eyebrows:

So you're saying that when google changes its algo some websites go down and other websites go up for certain keyword searches? And if you're one of the ones that go down you take in fewer sales?
Well I fucking never...
fucking enormous thread going on at WW about this update ... havent seen anything like it since the florida(?) update .... anyone else seeing massive changes in yer own serps?
Its called the "Dance" guys. Some sites go up and some go down then everything settles back again.

Reading this thread you'd be forgiven for not realising this is meant to be Webmaster board... sorry, but it's true. Perhaps someone could start a newbie forum and pop this thread in there?
Seriously, go and learn something over at WW or SP or so, and do it now before it's too late. Only one person on here so far has hinted that this is about Jagger... everyone else just seems confused.
So, what's your excuse for being ignorant of the current goings on with SEs? It should be part of your daily diet!
All I know I have a few extra pages in high places on Google from nowhere, and they've been up for over a year. The main domain does have a PR of 4 but big deal.. In fact since this dance and more listings on Google, sales have gone down.... :(

What part of my post did you have a problem with? I figured the advice was sound enough.
Anyhoo sorry if it upset you, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings :erk:
;)
What part of my post did you have a problem with?

www.WebmasterWorld.com, www.SitePoint.com, and yep the Jagger update is named after Mick. How's that for entertainment :)
Each Google update get's named - this one was called Jagger. As an update it was pretty huge, probably having more effect on the SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages) than any update over the last couple of years. Basically it seems that lots of sites that were ranking highly have dropped off the scale losing the owners $1000 per day. As a result others have climed and their owners are doing very nicely!
Also PR - right that it isn't much of an indicator of google rankings, though it is still part of the formula.
Why do people say they have a 'PR4 site', or whatever? Different pages on the same site can have a range of different PRs.
They're quoting the PR of their highest page - usually the index - though not in all cases. PR is high where you have the most incoming links, so it's usually the index.
As far as I am concerned, google is like a whore, the only hits I get are the ones I pay for :)
