how does this new space thing work?

I am guessing that if you send some goods up in a rocket, it will go colect it and then take it to the space station, but I am not sure.

I do not think it returns to earth, but I cannot see where goods in space are taken from/to, as I thought there was only the space station.

Till now equipment and supplies have been taken to the space station by shuttle (expensive) or Soyuz rocket (Limited space) both manned. The ATV is a large automated rocket it flies unmanned to the space station where it docks automatically, it is not designed to be re-used so after it is filled up with rubbish it is simply flown in to the earths atmosphere where it burns up.
