Went to PC World last night with a friend whos a newb with computers.
We chose one together and the assistant worked out a price for everything including printer/camera/bits of software etc.
I looked at the laptops while the sales guy was loading all my friends stuff onto a trolley.
Half of the laptops on display said "out of stock", not a good start
After 20 mins of waiting for a sales guy, i narrowed my selection down to two laptops. The sales guy said both of these were also out of stock.
No laptop for me then so i'll just buy quickbooks which was again out of stock
I walk over to my friend whos there with fiancee and excited kid looking at a big trolley loaded with goods but... the computer is out of stock!
After over an hour in there we all leave empty handed and pissed off.
PC World = Complete cack.
The smaller indies in the high street are better but with PC prices already crashing hard before Christmas even starts I think that a lot will be going out of business in the coming weeks.
At least you learnt they are shite without actually spending any money!
They are appaling, overpriced and clueless. Owned by DSG, what do you expect?
Try online retailers, find some via www.froogle.co.uk and check the reviews of the retailers.
For lappers, I always would recommend a thinkpad or (if you are not a racialist) an iBook.
massivly overpriced as well. also ignore the sales they mention in the papers, they NEVER have them in stock

A tip 4 you:
If you need something for a one off job, and pc world has it. Buy it, use it, take it back. Get your cash back.
All you do is say the thing does not work with your pc.
Lets face it, PC world attracts lots of business people with lots of cash and no idea what they are getting.
If they were not so dammed expensive I could forgive them for their poor service. But they are sooooo expensive.
But then again they are port of Dixon's, and they never seem to know what they are talking about when I have been the very few times.
If you do NEED to buy from PC world, buy at least from there web site as they sell stuff cheaper on-line.
Also check out Staples for pc stuff, as not only do they price match, but they know a bit off too.
I got a pocket pc cheap, by first going on line to the pc world website, then going to pc world, when they agreed to sell it as the same cost as on-line, then I went to staples who sold it even cheaper (as they contacted pc world to check the price).
You asked for advice on buying a laptop, if you said you were going to PC wank then the best bit od advice would be DON'T!

If things go wrong they are junk.
My laptop harddrive went wrong. So I went to the store.
Now this is a few years ago. When laptops were not cheap. It cost almost £3000.
So thinking that as I had spent £3000 and it was only 10 months old, they would look after me.
All I got was a silly moo manager give me the address and contact no of the manufacturers. She said she could not do anything and it was down to me to mess about sorting it out.
So I went back on Sat when it was busy, with a handful of letters and the laptop harddrive in my pocket. I went around the store handing out letters explaining it was not a good idea to buy from pc world as if things go wrong they will give a poor response.
Within 20 mins the manager who told me she could do nothing to help me suddenly found that she could and dealt with my hardrive. Thus a new harddrive.
I expect more than that when I spend £3000.
In fact the only reason I got it at pc world was believing that if anything went wrong I could just pop back.

And if you set sneezwarts to the homepage on all of them you would pick up some bookmarkers too.

i have this tendency to casually set new homepages on strangers' computers.
Fuck me ! i went to PC World last night for some memory guess what ? None in stock LMAO fucking PC World with no Memory. Had a quick scout around their shop and yeah most of the PC's on display were out of stock

Is the use of the word "casually" that makes that sentence so sinister... :eyebrows:

Yeah me too, but then I only buy components not ready built PC's.
The guys at Maplin usually know their shit, but they don't sell ready built boxes or laptops. They ain't cheap either.
Think I'll stick with mail order for most puter stuff. Using high street stores is just too much like getting your film developed at Jessops instead of at the Lab. What's that old saying? ...You pay a monkey’s wage - you get a monkey!
