I'm thinking of opening a $ bank account with Barclays will someone in the US be able to pay money into it just as they would a normal US bank account, or does it work differently?

they'd still have to send a wire to you,it just means that you can accept dollar amounts without any conversion costs being incurred.

its still a UK account - even though its in dollars - so you still pay the international wire charges, and people in the US won't be able to pay into it over the counter. All you really get to do is pick the day you convert from USD to £, but all the other charges are still as for a UK account.

What you are being offered is a UK account in USD, what you need is US account in USD, its a big difference. Have fun explaining banking to the fuckwits who work at the bank.

Thanks All, I figured this is how it would work.

I assume it's more or less impossible for a UK National to open a US bank account.

Which ever bank you are with in the UK will have a partner bank in the US. The hard bit is finding the right person in your UK bank who knows about it and who can start the ball rolling.

Thanks. I'll look into it, though I get the feeling I'd rather be poking my own eyes out that trying to achive this through my local branch.
