View Full Version : New Wide Screen Resolution Designs

Browser statistics show that the trend towards larger resolutions is well underway.
Stats taken from w3 Schools (http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp) show the majority of users surfing at 1024 x 768 or wider. The number of those surfing at 800x600 are still too great to ignore however.
After having a look at our competition we noticed most cam sites are base 800 x 600, with a few that offer larger video after clicking a link.
We decided to make it easy on the surfer and recently redesigned our sites to accommodate all browser sizes from 800 up to 1600 wide.
Upon entry the browser resolution is “sniffed” and the sites resolution is adjusted accordingly.
Please have a look and let us know what you think, any feedback is welcome.

A lot of people, although they have wide screens still browse using the smaller window, in which case you have to scroll horizontally with your design, 800x600 at least.
Personally I have never been keen on full width designs.

You mean they don't have the window maximized?

Good point, never thought of that. I personally don't surf that way. We'll get that fixed up, thanks for the feedback.
My screen is 1920 wide, so I have two browser windows side-by-side. But your site seems to detect this properly (ie. it looks at the window size and not the screen size), so it looks OK to me. I like how the pictures get bigger on larger sizes.
There's a bug, though: you don't detect resize events, so it'll look a bit strange if the user resizes the browser window...

Sorry maybe I didn't make it clear. The sizing is OK generally. Although as Helene points out the resize will be an issue.
800x600 still throws up a horizontal scroll bar though for me.

Yeah we felt it involved too much BS to detect resize events, just went with load and reload. Thanks again for the feedback.

I always try to go by stats I see to the sites I monitor. I've got about 100 daily uniques across 30 or so different type sites I can check stats for and they show:
48.64% at 1024x768
28.30% at 1280x1024
10.05% at 800x600
So the question then becomes if you fill the 1024x768 screen, will it inspire more sales then it kills for the 10% of 800x600 users? Pretty amazing 800x600 has fallen that low though. I hadn't checked in a bit so I was surprised to see that.

Well in that case, use your stats. Test it. for half your traffic give them a 800x600 and for the others give them 1024x768.
See if it effects conversion.

Yeah test and measure... the truth for any question about conversions I'd agree. We mostly design for 1024 and the numbers are good so I never bothered to look back to 800. It was more a matter of personal curiosity saying so...
