When I was a lad, Flash was evil and bare knuckle fights would break out over whether its should EVER be used on a porn site.

Funny how times change.

We just did a poll of the members and asked about Quicktime in general. I was surprised by how many members DIDN'T like .movs - every excuse from buggy player (its not) to uses to much CPU - I don't think it does, and anyway what else do you want to do WHILE watching a movie?

Surfers will just have to get over it, its by far the best.

Just as a tip, (and I'm sure you know of this, but others might not) Quicktime on a PC sometimes is a bit arse. But 'Quicktime Alternative' generally isn't.

And is free.

In the past every time I installed Quicktime on a PC it completely and utterly fucked it. It's not so bad now, but it's intregration with IE and FireFox still aren't brilliant. I still get frequent crashes when it does that thing where it opens a movie in the middle of a browser tab.

It works brilliant on my MacBook Pro though, but I guess that's to be expected.

Got an Adobe premier pro CS3 refresher course coming up in Oct so will be interested to see if this is included. I for one never thought flash would ever match or beat WMV in popularity ..but looks interesting... ...as long as its stable and 100 % compatible with windows operating systems

Cheers for that. Got any more good alternatives? The Acrobat alt you suggested a while ago is a cracker, gets used daily round here.

Possibly, but it was only launched in beta yesterday, so unlikely. Flash actually has a larger installed used base than WMV, and is totally cross platform. Not heard anything about Flash not being 100% compatible with windows? The point of its existance is to offer platform-neutral content...

Glad you like the acrobat one. I used that all the time when I had to work in Windows. Just the boot time of it alone makes it worthwhile.

Can't think of any other good ones right now, but will share when then pop into my little brain.

maybe you can pursuade SGS to switch from WMV..

and then you deal with all the support issues.

what you have to remember is 99% of your end users are non geeks.. its ok for you

I wasn't suggesting anyone switch from wmv for paysites. It works. I was just pointing out Flash now supports h.264 which is a good thing.

All these things need a a tipping point.

Support is easy. Tell the Mac users to buy a PC and the PC users to buy a Mac.

Well bugger me backwards with a kipper.

OK, its got buffering issues cos the site is getting CANED, but man oh man.

And you can just point the player to a regular file now, rather than having to compress to flv...

Interesting times

Excellent find Damo. Thats fucking amazing. That vid loaded up quite fast for me. Quality is superb. Argh I remember the days of Flash 5 when I was learning it for the first time. If i wanted to incorporate a video inside it I had to use Quicktime to open up the movie file, then use the copy frame function it had [the only media player at the time - we are talking the year 2000 year] to paste each frame individually into it. PAL formats had about 24 FPS ... you do the mathematical equations.... But I must say ... its incredible to see how much technology has advanced.

I think this is Adobe's way at getting back at Apple for them not incorporating Flash into the iPhone. Hopefully Apple will have second thoughts.

I think Flash is an excellent tool for the web, just has issues with file size and performance. Also, with the advances of actionscript, I think we may well see some high quality interactive forms of media. Like PROPER virtual tours etc. The actionscript seems limitless by the possibilities we see being churned out of newgrounds.com

And QuickTime Alternative AKA Media Player Classic is the dog's lovesacks. It's replaced all my media players [Windoze mainly] to view videos on. I only use Winamp to listen to music.

Once again, great find Damo!
