Better than Bob Dylan?
Queen I can see maybe the best performing artists. But the Pet shop boys wrote better songs than Bob Dylan?
Liberace

BTW, I saw Bob Dylan perform at the Isle of Wight Pop Festival in 1969.

Cool. Ive never seen him. But Ive heard, it goes two ways only with Bob. Either brilliant or shit. What was he for you?

Eventually. Used to take him an hour to sit down at the piano some days after he walked around shaking hands with all of the old ladies and strange crew of fans that used to follow him everywhere.

Don't miss the two part Arena documentary next week (26th & 27th) made by Martin Scorsese. A lot of it taken from 60 hours of unseen footage of Dylan's '66 UK (first time electric) tour. There was a preview on the BBC site.
Looks superb.

Superb. Back in those days with just TOTP, Whistle Test and the radio it was very strange to watch a god walk on stage and perform.

We are both old twats. :)
Very powerful performer and when you think that back then it wasnt a load of talentless wankers lip-syncing it was unreal. Also saw Jimi Hendrix, The Band and Janis Joplin and loads more too.
No Pet Shop Boys though.

I will just have to live with that. :)
All of the above were good at the time, they would be fuck all now. The beatles were only as big as they were because of the time.
Form what I have seen of Bob Dylon he is just a two bob hippy who probably wrote his crap while stoned.
Now if you wanna talk about song writers just take a look at Heaton and Rotheray, fucking brilliant
Johnny Cash.....
BTW since you like Bob Dylan, there is a new complation CD (double) and it is pretty good & I am not a big fan of the Bob.
matter of factly Chas n Dave are top

Dude. That wat t is all about. The time they were in. There was nothing like the beatles before the beatles. Thats why they were and still are so big. Im no fan of the beatles, to me the rolling stones are far better. But you cant take it away from them. They did what no one did before them. Plus they are actually great writers

how did they compare to Bob
Dylan and Jimi Hendrix?

Both the Stones and the Beatles have stood the test of time.

exactly that is the point. had it been your neighbour's dog doing what they did and being lucky enough to be promoted properly at the right time, he'd be the big star today.
Beatles aren't so great because they were good - there were several other bands doing similar shit - but cos they were the first to do it.

I wouldnt mind being a penny in the pound behind those two. :)

Isnt that what great bands are about? its not just about music. But that apart, were they not great song writers. Like I say Im no great fan, to me the stones were leagues better. But you cant take away from the fact that the Beatles wrote great songs
they were 1960s/1970s pop songs. a dime a dozen. i bet half of them would never have made the charts if anyone else had performed them.
with the same right Stock/Aitken/Waterman could claim to be the 1980s Beatles, by basically just putting a new faces to their ever same music.
great stuff IMO is like Pink Floyd. a band which managed to leave the average mid 1960s crap behind and developed new sounds.
also Prince, who does awesome and constantly evolving stuff since 1978. you might not even know how many artists performed his work, with Sinnead o'Connor and the Bangles just being the most noticed, but also Chaka Khan's 'I Feel Yor You' is in fact a 1978 Prince song redone, TLC's Waterfalls is his work and the list goes on.
and then there is Depeche Mode, a band growing up from early 1980s synthie pop to dark electronic music in the late 1980s up to using more and more non digital instruments nowadays.
when we talk about Depeche Mode, we must not forget the fouding member Vince Clarke, who moved on to do Yazoo, which gave us the awesome Alyson Moyet, moved on to do the Assembly with Feargal Sharkey and finally gave us Erasure with Andy Bell.
and now that i'm on about Vince Clarke, i also think of Yello, a very unusual swiss band, formed in 1980, still running as well.
guess i could fill a book with bands that are at least as good as the Beatles ever were.
The Rolling Stones are now and have always been a fucking shit band.
People will say the stones were better than the beatles and all that crap cos they want to be seen as "Rock'N'Roll".
While we're on the subject, why don't these old pensioners just give up, they weren't that great then but now they are a fucking joke. Old age pensioners trying to relive they youth. FUCK OFF!

ABBA
Queen
Pet shop boys
Abba - well ok their arrangements were exceptional but the lyrics seem to be mostly introvert, so I don't think they're quite up there with Dylan.
Queen - Yes musically and lyrically exceptional. Bohemian rhapsody is the epitome of this.
Pet shop boys - Pet shop Boys? Is this some kind of joke? That's like saying erasure, or eurhythmics etc. We're talking the best songwriters in THE WORLD here.
Doh

It's a tough one. I can't think of just ONE single best. There have been some exceptional songwriters in the past, but who cover very different genres.
Favourite vocalist: Little Jimmy Scott. --> Blue Skies (http://tgps.freakdaddys.com/anneliseuk/temp/js.mp3)
Favourite band: YES. --> Roundabout (http://tgps.freakdaddys.com/anneliseuk/temp/yes.mp3)
Favourite Bassist: Bootsy Collins
Favourite Lead guitarist: Steve Howe
Favourite Drummer: Keith Moon
Some of my favourite songwriters are: Pete Townsend, Jimmy Page, Dave Gilmour, Cat Stevens, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Neil Young...
NOT the best (http://tgps.freakdaddys.com/anneliseuk/temp/cd.mp3)
Tyla from the dog d'amour did some cracking songs, well worth a check out
