does anyone have a very cheap old laptop for sale? (doesnt have to be a powerhouse - something between 1/2 to 1 gig would be fine, just needs to be cheap)
i've tried ebay but the prices are silly on there.

wel i only need something for office type applications so i was thinking more of a second hand lappy under £100, like i said it doesnt need to be a whizz-bang machine. this company http://www.medisoncelebrity.com/product.html does a nice machine for £75 but i'm a bit weary about them at the moment

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200, and just bought a new comp so the 8200 could be for sale I guess, I bought it about 3yrs ago for like $1500 fyi (obviously not worth near that now)

check the uk craigslist?

not sure where in the uk you are, they have more cities than just london, but here's that http://london.craigslist.org/search/sys?query=laptop&minAsk=min&maxAsk=max

Check out Dixons - have a look in their reffurb section. I just picked up a dual core pentium 1.7Ghz with 1Mb memory, 60Gb hard drive, wireless, ethernet and a seriously good widescreen - laptop - course its an off brand but for £300 a bargain.

Only bastard was getting XP on it - it came with Vista and some strange drivers which caused a few headaches with XP - the big bugger was the SM bus which turned out to be an ATI driver called something like South Street. Took about an evening of web searching to get what i wanted and make it run sweet.

I got it for one of my kids and didnt want to spend a ton cos its his firts PC and he only wants to play games really.

Iwould just go on the Dell site and buy a cheap one.

They are built like tanks and should last you ages.

I think you can order one for around £300. And somtimes they do post and package for free so saving around £60.

The problem with getting second hand is that you may find the battery is duff or the screen has faults.

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_1501?c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1

£349

If you register, they email you deals.

Unless your in a hurry, you find from time to time they do knock £60 off for a week.

I got my pc (Dell) as that week there was no post or packaging.

But at £349 is irt worth bothing opting for a referbished or even second hand. May as well get it brand new.

Also Dell now offer XP or Vista so you have a choice.

The thing is guys that a new machine is just overkill for my needs, and i dont really want to spend £300 on a machine that will not get used that much and even then just for office work

thanks for the link slaxxx, i didnt know there was a london craigslist. it looks like i'll have to be quite quick/lucky to get a good priced one though.

There was an ad on TV earlier, I only caught a bit of it but it seems you can get a free laptop from PC World if you sign up with Orange broadband. Ok, I you will have to be fixed to a 12 month or more contract, but you get a free laptop and you pay for broadband anyway, so...

24 month contract too.

But that said its a great deal for students.

The thing is, is we will probably see other firms offer such deals too.

I caught the back end of the ad on the TV and I said to my missus it will probably be a 24 month contract :(

Still what is that saying about a free lunch...?

Its still not a bad deal.

As long as the broadband service is good, then its not bad.

After all at the moment most broadband services only offer a modem for a 12 month contract. I think a laptop is a nice deal.

And if they offer it, I am sure others will too.

It works out 24 months * £14 = just over £300. So its not too bad.

I think students will love it.

But as Isay, once one firm offers such a deal, others will too.

This time next year Isuspect many broadband firms will be giving away free pc's.

where have you been? Gateway did deals like that 10 years ago, with 3 year contracts as well.
