LONDON — Cheap production costs and liberal regulations on access have enabled a drastic increase in televised adult programming in Britain over the last year, causing many locals to decry that their homeland has become the porn capital of Europe.

While viewers in the United Kingdom have access to a whopping 27 porn channels, the nearest competitor in European TV porn is Germany, which offers a comparatively paltry five. The number is up a third from last year, surpassing even the number of children’s channels offered in Britain.

The bulk of Britain’s televised porn comes from two sources: Playboy, offering up six channels, and British press baron Richard Desmond, who is responsible for 12, including the Red Hot channel, Only 18, and Television X. Desmond, who owns multiple mainstream and lifestyle publications throughout the United Kingdom, reported earlier this year that X alone had almost 400,000 subscribers.

The primary reason for the growth, according to television analyst Gary Bison, is money.

"[These channels] are cheap to run. Like shopping channels they can break even within a year, compared to four or five years for more mainstream channels."

All the channels need, said Bison, is two girls, a sofa and a small studio.

Under British regulations, adult channels can air only between 10 p.m. and 5.30 a.m., but many critics complain that the channels also broadcast “taster,” or free previews of upcoming shows, on free channels throughout the day. They point to recent surveys released by a number of mainstream media publications that report most children in the United Kingdom have seen hardcore pornography before the age of 10.

“It’s disgusting and it’s wrong,” said Joan Filmore, head of British Moms Against Pornography, a newly developed group seeking to ban adult entertainment on British television. “Clearly this situation is bad for our children and bad for the country.”

Across the pond, however, a French pornography producer said the situation couldn’t be healthier, defending porn as a "cultural asset" in a letter to the Guardian, England’s largest newspaper. "In [places] where porn is outlawed on television the sex video output is by far the most voluminous and by far the lowest grade,” wrote Jean Guillore. "We would not be having this debate if porn was what it should be – joyous, well-made, aphrodisiac art."

Having a teen and younger children, I made a complaint about these "tasters" some time last year, to deaf ears ! Some of these programs are on at 9.00 pm. I would have to agree with Joan Filmore, that it is wrong and bad for our children.

Fine, while I or an other adult are in the house, it can be controlled.. but when no adult is present, they can watch these programs freely ! It should not be so easily available.

I dont know where you writer gets his facts but we have researched the adult TV world extensively as we came close to launching our own channel two years ago
Playboy at that time had less than 100,000 subscribers and were and still are market leaders
The channels are not cheap to run You need around £1m to launch
However break even point (not including some set up fees which are ongoing)
Is within 6-8 weeks, provided your marketing campaign is correct

To answer the second point regarding taster shows played out prior to 10pm
SKY has a parental control where you can password protect access for young children

I too have teenage and younger children and recently had a court battle for access to my daughter (who now lives with us) because i am in this industry
her mother decided to stop access. we showed our five year business plan in court which showed our commitment to make "organic" porn where all involved are willing and happy participants
We also proved that we had less porn in our house than average people as its all in our offices and we dont take work home

we had plans to make this a public thing but our consulting co went bust ...lol

we only have ourselves to blame regarding the difference to, say French porn.
The likes of TVX and the legacy of Sullivan and co who buy/produce nothing but downmarket crap. So now anything with a union jack on it and a girl and a cheap sofa seems to be the norm.

The main problem in the UK industry is most are in it for a cheap thrill and not as a business

ok rant over

Xcite

I actually emailed X-Biz my thoughts on the article which was utter crap. The only part that was correct, was who owned the channels... LOL.

Cheap production.. The difference in the pay in the States a model receives to here is almost identical. We do not have REAL adult tv as the rest of the EU. Our tv is still only at 18 and not R18. I wonder if I'll get a reply. I included a link to my own interview for YNOT, so they could see that I have a little knowledge of the UK adult industry. I'd love to know where the journalist got his info :)
