Hi all,

I'm about to register a couple of domains for my new site and I'm concerned about using my home address.

What do you do about this? Is there a way to register a .com without your address? Anyone got any advice?

Perhaps I'm worrying over nothing!

Use the domain privacy option if you are worried :) About $1 extra per year per domain.

Thanks Jel. Who offers this facility, I've not seen it before. I guess they register the domain for you, is the domain safe if you're details aren't on it?

www.moniker.com top-notch. Yes, your domain(s) is safe with them even though your address is hidden from the public eye.

depending on what you plan to do on your sites, you might also want to consider using a virtual office service, thus giving a real address in the WHOIS. most likely you will find one near you.

Thanks, that's a good idea.

I'm not wanting to do anything dodgy, just a simple TGP, but I don't want my home address linked to it, perhaps I'm worrying over nothing.

Goddady.com offer private registration! When you purchase your domain name through goddady around step3 you will see an option to add private reg etc...

They set up a proxy address and name. You can edit this to display whatever info you like.. Be warned if your going to build and submit galleries to TGP's some of the bigger TGP's don't accept galleries from Proxy's The HUN won't list your galleries if the website is privately registered etc..

All the best Bluey

not suggesting you plan anything dodgy. :)

however some people do have second thoughts to signup with a sponsor who hides their WHOIS. some TGPs will not accept your galleries, if you have a hidden WHOIS. just to name 2 examples. neither of that cases may apply to you.

such worries can be put at rest by having a physical address listed.

most virtual office services will be more expensive than the anonymous registrations together.

Is it possible to have name / address information hidden for a domain that you've already registered and for which you didn't apply for the domain privacy option?

with godaddy and namecheap you buy the privacy option as an add on and can enable it at any point you like.

cannot comment on moniker, as they obviously have enough business already and didn't react to inquiries on moving to them.

Yeah just upgrade to Privacy Registration. Obviously any cached Whois info will still be accessible for some time. Sort of defeats the object of upgrading lol. To remain in stealth mode requires that you do it from day one of registering the Domain

Yes, I wish I'd known it was an option from day 1.

123-reg don't seem to have this as an upgrade either. Guess I'd have to change registrar if I wanted to do this.

I've just created an account and registered a .com with Moniker to see how it goes.

I got an email telling me that the domain registration was fine followed immediately by another telling me there's a problem with my account and to get in touch. :noway2:

I'll call them in a couple of hours when they open and see what's up....

You could just change the domain register info! Correct Full Name and then add something like the following in the address fields (Sole-Trader this information is private) Seen that done many times... Though you may fall foul of ICANN Regulations, which does state all information must be correct and true etc..

Not much point in doing it now? As already stated the Whois cache will still display the old info.. Possibly an option on your next domain registration? Though to be on the safe side I'd just pay the extra few bucks and go proxy...

I use a PO Box for all my domains, it's about £50 for the year. It's not fool proof as I think the Post Office have to tell enquirers you're real address if they get in touch with them, but it's still less public.

The domain I created earlier with moniker.com is now working, a call to their support department sorted it.

The whois info is anonymous as requested, it cost an extra $4 a year.

They do allow you to opt-out of whois for .co.uk names- different than private registration as no contact details are shown instead of the the registrar's contact details.

OK. Mine's not a .co.uk, but maybe I should email and ask 'em anyway.
