Fusker type things rip all the pics from a gallery and kind of hot link the entire contents. With a number of galleries with a number of hi res pics, and potentially 100,000s leeching them, it can swallow a lot of bandwidth/transfer very quickly - and I doubt this kind of traffic would produce productive type-ins (they will probably just search for more free pics)

I had one gallery fuskered once which burned 80GB over an hour. I hotlink protected to the hilt since then.

You are correct - the only sales text that will be displayed is the watermark.

It is worst of all when an affiliate's gallery gets hit by this, because then even if there were type-ins from the watermark, the affiliate obiously wouldn't get his ref code clicked on despite burning gigs and gigs off his server...

The other two guys are spot on and the only real benefit you can hope for is some type in traffic, and to be honest the Fusker style environment is very much a leeching heaven as it's the participants who actually provide the content.

I know you have a pretty big setup over there at OT and you may not even notice the extra bandwith / transfer that can occur. But that bandwidth / transfer can be enough to sink lesser sites! The 80Gb over an hour is not out of the ordinary.
