As the iPhone hype monster stomps its way across America, AppleInsider reports that the first shipments have touched down at major FedEx depots across the States. Apple has reportedly hired armed guards to protect those FedEx depots before shipments go out — we’re not kidding. The site also notes that in addition to hiring crowd control specialists, AT&T has formally called all hands on-deck for the iPhone launch day.
Meanwhile, several sites are reporting that — although the iPhone is supposedly unsubsidised by the network — AT&T is planning to charge $175 (about £88) for early contract termination.
Lastly, details have emerged via the Boy Genius Report of the iPhone US data plan, dubbed the ‘iPlan’. Unlimited data use (over slow non-3G networking) is thought to cost between $35-$45 (£17.50-£22.50), and will either include 2000 or unlimited texts.

The iPhone is only available via AT&T Wireless, an exclusive deal apparently,
AT&T runs on the Edge network which covers 13,000 cities and towns in the US whereas their 3G network only covers 165 major metro areas in the US.
So this leaves Apple the option to introduce a second and third generation iPhone, typical.

Fair point but it means the phone doesnt offer any sort of "hi-speed" net access which for a phone being pitched as an internet phone seems a bit remiss
AT&T don't have good hispeed data coverage. That's why it went with EDGE.
However, it does have wifi, so you could hop on a hotspot to do your googlemaps/web/email stuff.
I would like one, as the UI is just gorgeous. And I am a mac whore. But not without 3G.
Also bear in mind the US are years behind when it comes to mobile technology.
What is amazing about the hype created in America is that it is a bloody phone. That's all. And yet everyone is talking about it, and now people are camped out waiting in line to buy one. It is predicted it will sell out.

yes, I spoke to himon and refused to continue the call - I phoned him back on his land line. sounded a lot like a skype call does, long distance

Talking of skype, you have had bad experiences with it? I use it ALL the time and people comment on how the quality sounds better than a landline or mobile. But I have got a poncy headset with a preamp.
Skype Out is the nuts. I can speak to friends in the States on their mobiles for an hour and it costs about 50p.

You misread me ....what I meant was its an Apple product and all the "Must have's" will fall for the hype and queue to have one, and preferably before anybody else...

you missed the bit where i said most buyers will buy sealed boxes based on little real knowledge of its technical abilities .. its called brand marketing.. people do buy brands blindly

It is widely known that Apple rushed this into production due to the lead stolen by Sony in the walkman phone market. lets face it the other features are add ons that Sony could copy in a heartbeat.. Apple just wanted a music playing phone on the market as Ipod sales were being lost to the phone sector..
I dont give a toss which one is better. Apple buyers will fall for the hype and buy it regardless It certainly does look better than the 950i but thats not hard as the 950i is a non functioning disaster.

I know Playboy does, I posted that earlier on in this thread and I know Digital Playground are offerring 158 free trailers to their movies which will probably link to their movie site Adult DVD Empire and try to get the punters to buy more movies.

Apple fans will know EVERYTHING about this (and prolly hve the tech spec memorised). They will have watched the live stream of Jobs' keynote when it was launched. They will have been reading the dozens of rumour sites, the blogs, the reviews in Time, Wall Street Journal, and the NY Times, everything they could possibly get their hands on.
If you think that apple zealot fan boys buy without knowing about it's technical features, you really no nothing at all about how Apple market. The Reality Distortion Field Jobs has is strong, but it's not about hiding tech specs.
That isn't to say that Apple fans will not just buy anything Apple put out, of course they will, but they will know ALL about it before getting one.

I had a speccy. 48k of RAW POWER to play Horace Goes Skiiing on.
But then the Amiga, oh baby. With the 512MB ram upgrade. I was a computing GOD.
To me, it's about the games. If I want to play a platform exclusive game, I buy the device. I had a PS2, Xbox and GameCube. I now have a 360, and if they ever bring out more than Wii Sports, I will get a Wii. And if sony ever bring out a game I want (Little Big World, COME ON), I will get one of them too.

There was some simple POKE command that brought up the loading fuzz screen on the speccy. That was fun too. Watching kids wait for the game to load. BUT THERE WAS NO GAME LOADING. Oh how we laughed.
