Try them with homemade lemon curd...
Ingredients:
3 large eggs
1/3 cup (80 ml) fresh lemon juice (2-3 lemons) (do not use the bottled lemon juice)
1 tablespoon (4 grams) finely shredded lemon zest
3/4 cup (150 grams) granulated white sugar
4 tablespoons (56 grams) unsalted butter, at room temperature and cut into small pieces.
Method:
In a stainless steel bowl placed over a saucepan of simmering water, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and lemon juice until blended. Cook, stirring constantly (to prevent it from curdling), until the mixture becomes thick (like sour cream or a hollandaise sauce) (160 degrees F or 71 degrees C). This will take approximately 10 minutes. Remove from heat and immediately pour through a fine strainer to remove any lumps. Cut the butter into small pieces and whisk into the mixture until the butter has melted. Add the lemon zest and let cool. The lemon curd will continue to thicken as it cools. Cover immediately (so a skin doesn't form) and refrigerate for up to two weeks.
Makes 1 1/2 cups (360 ml).
* lighter lemon curd, good for crumpets:
whip 1/2 cup (120 ml) of heavy whipping cream and fold into the lemon curd.
A good salted butter, high quality or preferably home made jam or marmalade.

Ive never heard of anyone eating ham on a crumpet, infact apart from butter Ive never heard of anything sweet going on butter

Yes ham on crumpets does sound like an abortion. I have seen them served with grilled bacon and a syrup, but it looks nasty.
Salted butter is used in savoury foods like flaky pastry, sauce, ham on bread etc. Unsalted butter is used to make sweet foods, pate sable, pate brisee (sweet pastry), sponge cake, biscuits etc.
Putting jam on top of un-salted butter isn't exactly wrong, it's not really the done thing.

Well the principle ingredients of baileys are in fact chimpanzee puss and pigs sperm so I suppose its not too surprising when it mutates back to its natural form when allowed to mix with a more agreeable substance.

The makers of marmite need to investigate this phenomenon. The more twisted and perverse the person the more chance they'll like marmite on their crumpets. There's money to be made in a niche paysite there somewhere I'm sure.

this thread, although started out with the honest intention to broaden the knowledge on taking delight in crumpets, quickly turned into showing up those with no balls (sorry Rosie, you know how it's meant)
