View Full Version : Punk theme...

It's very pretty, and I know punk's gone all trendy again, 30 years on... but Exodus (also 30 years ago) was recently declared the best album ever made, by Time magazine. And rightly so IMHO.

So can I request a reggae theme next please? And none of your minstrels this time, thank you very much.

Now, time for an avatar update...

It's alright, Bob Marley's gone all trendy again too so we can pretend to be young whippersnappers. I saw Stephen Marley play last night, along with his brothers Julian and Damian. They're off to Glasto today. So see, even the young ones are into it.

Go on, do it and I won't tell people about your George Formby collection.

Ha ha, Levi Roots: a modern hero.

How he raised that cash I don't know, but it's worked for him.

How many writers from Time voted Exodus the best album ever and how can one (non music specific) magazine make such a claim. In fact how can anyone say that ??

If you as a listener think it is, then it is ...why would anyone need a critic to tell them that

personally I have the album and its a great album. and might be in my top ten, but that depends on my mood..

I dont buy into other people telling me what i should think about music, film, book, food, art, theatre or anything else

I just checked and I was mistaken. It was declared the best album of the 20th century, not the best album ever. Is that better?

Declared by who ?? one Time writer, two, three? a public vote? and even if it was, it doesnt make it so..

My point, which you seemed to miss. was the best album of all time is judged by the listener. Not some critic with differing tastes.

there is only one measure of succes for any album and that is sales. Which certainly doesn't measure quality.

If you think Exodus is the best album ever.. fantastic, you made a choice based on your listening experience.

I have to add I think your choice is tainted by many other things in your life other than simply music, but I could be wrong

As a music lover i would find that choice impossible as my listening habits change so often.

As you imply, my choice of Bob Marley is just driven by my PC nature, as exposed by yourself and other great commentators on this forum. Given free will, I'd really go for Wham's greatest hits, but everyone knows that a white artist, even one as great as Andrew Ridgely or David Hasselhof, could never win such an award, thanks to the oppressive power of the liberal-PC elite. Frankly, I'm surprised that even Marley was allowed to win such an award, not being a one-legged lesbian n all.

TBH I've followed Bob Marley since about 1977 and I may well choose him as the greatest ever writer/musician. My personal favourite of his albums is Survival... as for greatest album I might shortlist:

Survival
Exodus
Dark Side of the Moon
Sergeant Pepper
Hand on the Torch (US3)
Arrested Development
The Miseducation of Lauren Hill
Welcome To Jamrock (Damian Marley)
Guru's Jazzmatazz Streetsoul
UB40
Present Arms (UB40)
Monkey Business (Black Eyed Peas)

Unfortunately, those are almost all black artists, thus proving again my PC liberal pro-Islamic anti-Israeli agenda.

Mozart's greatest hits on wax cylinder premium edition pretty much ruled in the 19th Century :)

I believe it was, sadly. But it doesn't stop her from being one of the top singer-songwriters of the decade.

That question's a bit PC for you - I thought that kind of casual racism was OK in your book.
