View Full Version : What's that then?
since a few days i have a funny little warning icon when booting the system. it sits in the tray, when i hover the mouse over it, it does not give any info like the others do and when i click it, it just goes away.
device manager doesn't complain about anything, nor do anti-vir or ad-aware.
no software has been installed in the last months (to my knowledge anyway). the red x-ed icon next to it is just the mobile not being connected.

ideas, anyone?
I get that occasionally but on hovering get a 'write to drive D failed' or something similar. Probably not the same thing though.
i'd actually be happy if it told me something worrying like not being able to write to a HD. but it remains stumm. which is more worrying, kinda. :D
isnt that the warning to let you know that automatic updates is switched off?
automatic updates are switched off, but they are since i set this box up, which must be around 18 months now. in fact it's one of the first things i always disable. none of the other boxes or the laptop complain.

why do you switch them off?
why do you switch them off?
i prefer control over what gets installed.
You sure its not always been there but just not visible. You only see a certain amount of icons and the rest are hidden, so maybe its always been hidden...if you know what I mean ;)

i know what you mean, and no, no icons get hidden. it's in the system tray on the right, not the quick start one. system tray doesn't hide anything, AFAIK.
Does it pop up when you type racist or bigoted posts, have you installed the PC PC update?

curious, i never noticed that option, but it's there.
on the plus side, while checking, i noticed one program that should autostart isn't in the tray, so maybe i found the culprit. :)

im sure this will sort it out!
"I always thought i maintained my pc better than my children. Then i stumbled across this free program this morning called Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personal. Oh my fukin god what a difference it has made to my pc. Try it you will be amazed.
Another handy one is SmartDefrag V3 beta that has a handy auto defrag and works in the background when your cpu
is running at 20% or less.
Try it all free ............ let me know what ya think

Fukin beat me to it :geek:

of course that would have been too easy.
apart from the suggested groundbreaking software, any other ideas popping through the odd head out there? ;)
last night i managed to sort this issue. it was pretty easy, too, actually.
deinstall Norton, slap on Kaspersky, which i had planned since many moons already.
astounding how deep Norton seems to reach into the system, deinstall reported 5 issues with other software. and there is an obvious increase in performance as well. i've read about these points but sort of saw them as fan boy exaggeration and stuck with what i was used to since the mid 1990s. :D

what the windowcare or the smart defrag?
i was looking at that windowcare, does it do what it claims?
