View Full Version : very cheap sat nav

As you know i have been needing a sat nav for ages.

when you drive all over the uk it makes sense.

well to be honest the £400 ones seemed expensive and big.

But I found one made by Medion. Checked the reviews and they said it was very very good.

So looked on the net. Some places it was £140, but some were doing it at £79. Great thought.

But then somone said on a message board that toys r us were doing it at £55.

wow.

gave the local store a call. and they had 1 left.

got it. its great.

small enough to pop in your pocket.

seems to do most things.

it runs on windows ce.

you can even tell it that your on foot or on a bike.

i thought it would be basic but it seems to do most things.

the worse bit is the female voice telling you directions. i have learnt over the years to know fwemales give wrong directions, so its a bit disturbing to have a female tell you where to go.

but as i say £55 for a sat nav, is a bargin.

they are not on the toys r us website. you need to phone your local store.

I have it by my bed, and i turn it on, so I can listen to her talk to me.

Its a bit sad realy.

Taking DVT's advice we called up toys r us and whadya know, they had some so we popped along and got one.

It's not half bad at all actually and is good for a budget sat nav. Does the job and is pretty thorough, we're pleased with ours for a whole 59.99 lol....Budget in a box :)

i would have been happy to pay £100 for it, so at that price your mad not to get one.

currys charge about £80 for it, and others even more.

By coincidence I used a tomtom satnav thingy for the first time today. I was driving someone elses car and they had one, and it was quite impressive. I'm tempted to go buy me one.

Paul and I went driving around today with the littkle medion one and were pretty impressed with the use of th thing, we went the wrong way and what not and it still did as it was told, we're even thinking of giving her a name lol...

For 59.99 you cannot go far wrong. Our Toys R Us only had two left when we got there as they sell out very quick. I would definitely say they are worth the money.

Great thing is when we leave the car it's small enough to fit in my oversized handbag LOL. It's not too heavy. The holder with suction cup could do a bit more in terms of grip, have visions of it flying out the window so going to get some sticky pads from halfords, other than that, it' a good buy :)

clearly you have lost the argument.

clearly i am correct (as always).

now all your doing is showing yourself up with silly and pointless arguments.

wordforhire understood that i was correct, and went out and got one. she is now happy and will not get lost.

there is no need for anyone to make desisions, simply do as i say and you will be happy.

hense why i should rule the world.

I did try satnav in my GTR (which is what you've got too, right..?) - problem is that the ones for ground use tend to stop working at 160km/hr, to prevent their being used in aeroplanes, so I could only use it for about 10 seconds after setting off. Then I got one for aircraft; it didn't seem to know about roads and suggested that I shouldn't drive round London at less than 5000 feet..

Nah we don't have the liner anymore. We have an STI Scoob, been a while since we had the skyline actually, sold it last year to pauls friend. Who absolutely adores it. Paul wants an evo next :/ I'm happy with the scoob tbh.

But we searched loads and loads of cars and not one had it when it was imported, I imagine it'd have been Japanese if it did come with it! Scary thought...

You may find their sat-navs are like their radios, and you get Terry Wogan on it. I could only ever get radio 2 on my import's radio, and that was after fitting an FM expander.

In fact if I had Wogan giving me directions, I think I'd have a head on for fun after about ten miles :character0072:

Lol yeah I hate their radios, it sucks having to buy a new one everytime just to get a radio station :( We never bother with the bw extender as the players are usually shite too.

Sat Nav? Load of bollocks.

All you need is an AA road map for £2.99. A piece of paper and a pencil to write down the route before you set off (0.5p) and a blob of blue tac to stick it to the dash board (0.25p).

Or alternatively get the wife to map read.

On second thoughts .....

Yeah, I was only kind of joking.

If I travelled around a lot I'd definitely get one. And for getting around in cities they're great.

For the sort of driving I do I'm pretty good at looking at a map 2 minutes before I set of and memorising it. I mean you have to admit that maps are for real men, and sat navs are for woofters.

I just use the stars to navigate. Hardcore baby.

Obviously this means I can only drive anywhere at night, but heck, at least I don't look like a big homo with a tom tom.*

*and yes JT, please insert the really obvious 'you look like a homo with or without a sat nav' gag here.

Real men like me can read a map...

You drive a skoda.

I think this sums you up. I see it now, a little old man in his skoda, with a flask of tea and his road maps.

actualy there are good reasons to have a gps. Often I come home in the dark from a shoot with a model and its not always easy to work out how to get home or where you are. Reading a map in the dark is a pain.

Also as i am dislexic it means i have a poor memory so even if i read a map i would forget the directions.

also i do not want to read a map in traffic in case i go bump.

the other advantage to gps is that if i desice to drive to a new destination, ie on my way to point b i drive to point c, it can easily take me back again.

also while its one thing to read a map, these devises can find you the quickest route, which you may not be able to work out on a map.

every time i go into london i get lost. i am now looking forward to my next trip.

i suspect that the £50 i spent on this, i will probably save in petrol within a month or two, simply as i will no longer be driving all over.

i remember doing a shoot in newcastle and on my way home they shut the a1 down. it was dark iand i had no idea where to go. with the gps i can simply tell it not to use motorways and off i go.

i think it depends if you do drive to places a lot you do not know. for me i do that a lot.

in the past i use the aa website for directions, but even then i got lost.
