Pinging - does it work?

Any seo experts who can explain to me in plain english the pros and cons of pinging your sites.....

Got pinging software as part of the blogs organiser suite I bought, and just getting round to deciding whether i should use it or not....

what i would like to know is why we only ping when using blogs, why not ping regular sites when you make an update?

you do not ping your site but the blog directories, thus alerting them to your recent post update and hopefully displaying it in your listiing.

some directories take an issue if you ping more than 3 times a day. so disabling BO's option to ping after every change is prolly a good idea, especially when still fiddling with a blog.
