i saw someone carrying an affiliate link for that 'service' in their sig. now i'm torn between disagreeing with giving freeloaders a tool to get stolen stuff even easier and thinking at least make them pay a bit for searching.

thoughts?

We use relevant newsgroups as an advertising tool by putting out loads of branded movie samples and photo galleries, so if people can access our spam... er..ads easier I'm all for it :)

Don't like it, never have.. and remembering some old threads the owner has quite the attitude.

we did that as well for some time. i was always upset by the loads of stolen stuff though. i'd guess your more targetted adverts would find a better response though.

The only problems we've ever had with newsgroups is trying to keep a posting account long enough! We don't flood, only post to relevant groups and never cross post - but still we get our accounts pulled because people don't like the fact we're advertising for a paysite. Nobody has a problem with posting stolen content though as that's far more ethical obviously.

i would think that's cos you as paysite advertiser are the enemy in their eyes, the one wanting their money.

i'm always amazed how much talk about stolen software (and music) is going on at some boards. when you challenge these people and point out that by admitting they steal they portray themselves as not trustworthy really, you will find yourself attacked most of the times.
most hilarious argument was 'we are a poor country' - well yes, tough tits. there is enough freeware out there that will do what you need for no cost, be it HTML editing, image processing, whatever. surely if you cannot afford the software, you aren't big enough a pimp to warrant professional tools anyway.
