View Full Version : Tips on using laptops in the garden
I cant seem to see the screen on my laptop in the garden, even if its in the shade.
Anyone got any tips on such trickery? :geek:

get a new laptop.
Some have screens that do not have this glare problem. Sony do some good laptops with screens that do not have this problem.

I cut up a Rice Krispies box and made a kind of screen for mine last year. It helped quite a bit.
Do what I do. Leave laptop in your living room with screen facing the garden. Take wireless keyboard & mouse into garden, and view the screen with a pair of binoculars - works a treat.
Frosties box's are good also :)

I'm moving next month & will finally have a garden again after 2 years in a first floor apartment. I'm very much looking forward to working outside over the Summer, but I'm not overly keen on Rice Krispies or Frosties. Would a Nestle Clusters box do the job?
I think a shoebox would be big enough for JT's laptop as it goes

well apparantly we are all buying porn for mobiles so some screens must work outdoors !!
Oh & for fucks sake dont be trying to use those mini size selection packs (That's right, the ones where the Coco Pops always get left till the end coz they taste like crap) you'll have too much trouble trying to tape them all together into something worthwhile, in fact, by the time you've got a working " Ceral Blocker" (As they're technically known) the British Summer will have ended :(

This was a common problem with digital cameras until a couple of years ago, until the better manufacturers made screens with a higher resolution and brightness output at a lower power consumption.... and made them non reflective.
Currently in terms of laptops (and I dont know about the sony x screen) I expect its something they're working around..... but in the mean time I recommend you move to scotland becasue they dont get any sun up there, but just make sure u buy a waterproof pc

I suspect in truth, screens are not in general designed for outdoor use as in 99.9% of laptop use, they are used on a desk.
Very few use them outdoors.
Also it presumably keeps laptop prices low by using a basic screen.
In the long run it probably makes sense to simply buy a new laptop with a screen for outdoor use. From what Ihave seen sony seem to have the best ones.
Otherwise you will strain your eyes and spend most of the time struggerling to see the screen.
One thing that may be worth trying is an anti glare screen. They were popular a few years ago for vdu's (monitors). You may even get an old one free.
My mate just got a new laptop and the screen is like a fucking mirror.
Mine is a non reflective type of fhingymajig, problem is my leads ain't long enough. I have French doors so I open them and let the garden in.

Try that - never used it but it seems to be what you want. They also do them in 12, 14 and 17" sizes so should be able to get one for most laptops!
it never worked for me have you tried getting an umberella or a gazebo to stop the sun a bit?
is the laptop an ultra bright screen?

I was in the car yesterday and couldn't see the screen on my laptop so had to hold the towel out over the screen to stop the reflection. I imagine a brolly or gazebo type thing should do the trick, as long as there is like a hood over the top of the screen.

I think flats are external to enter and apportments internal.
Ie, with flats you go arond the outside to enter. Almost like houses on sepertate levels.
With appartments its more like a hotel where you have an internal coridor.
The idea of flats were to create streets in the sky.
tried working in the garden last year with the laptop - biggest problem was the Rabbit chewing the extension lead - and I couldn't see the screen either

I was given a brand new replacement cause the fuckers took 5 weeks to send me out a power pack. That's all that was wrong with it in the end and they pretty much forgot to get it out so with business cover if they take more than 28 days we are entitled to a brand new replacement for same value as we paid, so got one which works just nice.
Dave - we also live in a first floor 'apartment' *flat*. It's horrible not having the garden especially with the wee one around but we are also hopefully moving around 15th June (providied the house is built by then, but it should be) and everything goes through all right with the mortgage. Will find out in about a week.

I always sit with mine on my lap, never at a desk, if I wanted to sit at a desk I'd use a desktop.

never (if your male at least) use one on your lap, as if you do, it can affect your equipment due to the heat.
Most laptops are simply desktop replacments. And built for that purpose.
Its a bit like moutain bikes. Many (low cost) are made for road use, and would fall aport if riden off road.

I find that getting in the wheelie bin with the laptop helps, gets a bit warm at times though, but it does mean you can knock one out without being spotted by the neighbours when you feel like it. Thinking about putting a shelf up in mine too so that i can stick a picture or two up.

I got my new mortgage offer yesterday.
Not easy getting someone to lend ya 200k these days but i got
there in the end. Now i got the same problem as WFH waiting for the fuker to be built.

It's actually easy getting someone to lend you it as we are not far short of that amount but only if you are willing to put down a nice deposit or have perfect credit history - I have no credit history whatsoever so it makes it a tad difficult...

There is absolutely nothing wrong with my credit because I do not have any. No credit card, no loan, no store card, no mortgage, no nothing. So because I have none my score is terrible. All pretty simple but a fucking pain in the arse.

Yes I've checked. I know exactly what the problem is but I can't sort it out as it's a catch 22. You don't have any credit so no one will give you any but you can't get any till someone will give you it! It's not that big a deal money wise it's just pissing me of as no one will give me it.
