In today's news: New York City is going to introduce the congestion charge, pioneered globally by London. Now the world's two greatest cities are leading the way, many more will follow - perhaps, one day, even Leeds.

Nice, for a change, to have something that makes you proud to be British. :crown:

I think Leeds city cener is a bit small. To be honest the center is now blocked during the day anyway.

I am not against the charges.

The problem with the london one is that its not clear (to me) where the zone is.

These days I do not drive during rush hour and even then there are roads I avoide due to traffick (and also speed cameras).

For me the problem we have is that the roads are in a poor condition.

For me (in Leeds) I find it quicker to cycle into Leeds than drive, plus no worries about parking.

The thing I like about London is that if you have an electric car your exsempt from charges. If I was in London I definatly would have an electric car.

I guess the question is, do you prefer to pay a charge or sit in traffic for ages burning up fuel.

Neither. :)

Bike and moped sales have rocketed since the charge was introduced. Plus bus usage is up and electric cars are appearing more frequently. I rented a car this weekend to go out of London and I instantly got stressed from sitting in queues of traffic. I can't imagine having to do that every day - whatever you drive, it's no fun at all.

I love the London Congestion charge, like all good capitalists I think it's a good thing that poor people are not allowed on the roads and are forced onto the dirty crime infested public transport system. Leaves plenty of extra space for me .

Its like Victorian times have returned to Britain. :bobby:

Neville Duke, Frank Whittle and Aston Martin make me proud.

Just cause the Americans have gone mental as well doesn't make me happy in the slightest.

Funny you should say that. I was reading about Marie Antionette yesterday, apparantly thats not what she said. She in fact said let them eat broiche.

Broiche wasnt the type of cake it is today, then it was a good quality bread. So the line was almost certainly a phrase of kindness, not of decadence, like the socialists proganda movement at the time (Jerrys distant relatives) had people believe.

You have to remember that all true socialists are the wealthy. Who wouldnt dream of getting on public transport, so that wouldnt be a popular move.

The working class man can't afford such high falutin dreams like socialism. He has to live with the realities of capitalism. Which now includes higher taxes & getting mugged on public transport.

Socialism is a past time for the rich only.

As you can imagine I am just tearing hair out here with anger.

I dont give a fuck how much I have to pay to drive into London its when you lot start banning cars that will be a problem for me.

what amazes me is you think motorbikes, buses and electric cars are "greener" than, for example, a well developed and advanced petrol car.

Bikes do not have catalitic convertors for one, and its sales of bigger bikes that are rocketing, not mopeds. all the "right on" chinless twats are buying BMW trails bikes (The UK's best selling bike last year. usually its a moped or small sports bike) thanks to the Ewan and Charlie effect. Buses are generally fucking old diesels, and electric cars just move the emmisions from a reletivly clean car to an old gas or coal powered power station. but thats somewhere away from you so i suppose thats ok?.

If you got stressed from driving a car its your lack of experience and confidece thats to blame, not the traffic around you

JT has just said "socialism is a pastime for the rich only" What really gets me is your seemingly socialist views didnt get in the way when you sold out to the capitalist ££

or is your socialism just for others to keep up

I've been driving in London for over 20 years. It just pisses me off to be going SLOWER in a car than I would be if I was cycling.

1) Buses, motorbikes and electric cars ARE less polluting than private cars, whether you believe it or not.
2) New buses are much cleaner than old buses. Thanks to the congestion charge, we have loads of nice new, clean buses in London (paid for by people like you).
3) The less cars in London, the nicer it becomes to live here: cleaner air, faster journeys, less fatalities, less noise.

But every time you do, you contribute £8 (soon to be £25) to improving public transport. Thanks to the good ol congestion charge, you can still be a selfish wanker, and London gets to benefit - it's a win-win situation.

Yea I think the congestion charge is a good idea. What I don't like is the way they said they would not use the cameras for anything but charging but now they link them up to the rest of their big brother number plate reading system.

here is a tip if you keep your plate in the window you can chuck it on the floor for a few mins when you go past cameras!

Im with you on this one...not the bit about the selfish wanker though...

I think its only right that we pay some form of charge to travel into historical City centers..and I would include Cambridge on the list...along with a few others.

However...Anyone travelling up and down the A1 at the moment will have experienced the horror story that is the Average Speed Camera Zone...what a bloody mess...and the are installing the on a 10 mile stretch near me...time to move back into Central London I think...!!!

1)Sorry thats not strictlytrue.. (notice the play on words?) not all buses, bikes and electric cars are cleaner than all cars but would be interested where you get your information that they are ?
2) New buses are cleaner than old buses? true, have a little look round the centre of London and count the older style buses compared with the new? Maybe i need to travel more into London by car to pay for a few more. The congestion charge whilst i agree in principle is a bollocks tax if we have to pay for toll roads or pay-per-mile we should have fuel tax and road tax abolished
3) if you want less cars, noise, and fatalities move to the fucking country. You live in a countries capital city FFS you expect quiet ??? as for less fatalities perhaps ...no i edited that one out was totally un-PC

Actually i never take the Jeep to London i always go by train. i just like to wind you up:kissass: and when i drive in our city here i use a Fiat Punto which is more eco-friendly than your washing machine. i can get about much quicker than a bike and park without any problems and be totally anonymous. I have a motorbike too and it uses more fuel than the Punto.

The congestion charge is a tax.

It is about raising money, not about congestion.

It is a tax that allows people who can afford it to drive in London, while those who can't can't, making it clearer for those who can. :racing:

But actually, congestion has not improved as significantly as predicted although Red Ken is not making the money he thought he would either (work that one out!)

The American embassy owe millions of £ in CC as they say it is a TAX & therefore they are exempt (Red Ken is disputing it is a tax) so I think it is hilarious that NY is now going to put a CC in!!!

Other embassies have followed the Americans & are refusing to pay CC.

Some of you were talking about Socialism - there is an expression for what you were saying; Smoked Salmon Socialists!

I think Red Ken is a complete twat (for many reasons). :Penis (but I couldn't find a Smilie for a twat!)

I am NOT proud to be British, English or a Londoner, again, for many reasons.

I went to see a friend in Hammersmith a couple of weeks ago and it cost me about £12 return on the train and tube. I set off from Forrest Hill.

Next time I go, I'll drive. It will be quicker, and only cost me a couple of quid. Also I will not have to walk all the way to the station and from the busstop so it will be safer and less tiring. Also having a car handy, we can go for lunch somewhere off the M4 in Berkshire, where the food will be better and cheaper than in Hammersmith.

Yeah & it would have been cheaper even if you had decided to drive through central London & pay the Congestion Charge!

I went on Saturday morning and came back on Sunday morning. The roads looked pretty clear to me, and you don't have to go thru the middle of London to get to Hamersmith. My friend lives close to Putney bridge, so I think that should be an easy trip.

I live in Willesden, not so far from Hammersmith, and I've cycled to my mate's place in Lewisham. Best part of two hours - not for the faint-hearted. The bus takes almost as long, but tube/train takes about an hour. Driving takes 1-2 hours depending on traffic.

The real answer is not to live so far from the centre. :P

I went to secondary at Aylestone High (now called Queens Park Community School). I went to primary school in Wembley, then moved to the 'hood. Aylestone was one of the worst schools in Brent at that point (and that's saying something) but I think they've got their act together these days, not to mention rebuilt most of the buildings since I left in '83.
