If you stop going to those horrible places and look around, you'll find some brilliant small independent bakers........baking a huge variety of differnt bread, organic or non organic, gluten free etc etc....
French bread is ok if you eat it within 1 hr of buying it....
IMHO - the best bread in the world is found in Belgium. I was staying in Bruge once, came to to breakfast and there were 20 different types of bread and bread rolls all laid out... all absolutely super...
Went around Europe a yrs back and I can't remember trying the bread in the UK. I think beer was the closest thing to bread there. Oh well, next time!
Best bread I have ever, ever tasted:

Best bread I've ever had comes from a little bakery in Totley (posh bit of Sheffield).

I think "t" northerners idea of posh is a bit different than southerners
You can buy good everything in this country, but the average scum bag doesnt want it. They want to buy plastic wrapped crap from supermarkets.
The reason we have such poor quality food compared to our European friends is because 90% of the country are scum bags

Generally farmers markets are a good place to start.
I made my own sausages once, pig skins, shouldier of pork, seasoning, fat the lot. It took fucking ages and was a right hassel, cost a fortune and tasted crap :(
I miss really good fresh white crusty bread living out here - they're all health freaks when it comes to bread - they add nasty wheatgerm and all sorts to it

Sunday Tmes yesterday..... seems like some of these farmers on markets aren't exactly farmers...... been ripping off the notting hill brigade by buying at tesco for £1 per lb, rolling stuff in dirt then selling on at 4 times the price they paid...
Thats why u never see a poor farmer :)
