One of my PC's just seemed to "crash" ... the screen went blank then a "no signal" msg popped up on the monitor .... So I rebooted ... it seemed fine for a few minutes ... then screen goes blank again .. and "no signal" ... further reboots caused the display to vanish even quicker, like the second it gets into windows.

I've ruled out the monitor ... so thinking it must be graphics card - anything else I should try before I fuck off into town and get a new card?

test run a card from another box to rule out it's the port rather than the card.

Aye ... I don't have another pci-e card here ... everything but :S

Just checked it out again ... sits there happily running away in safe mode ... will try updating card drivers ... :geezer:

A rebooting PC is usually down to the graphics card, or to some software writing to the card. I'd try changing the graphics driver to a vanilla driver.

I also had a problem a couple of times with a graphics card earthing to the PC case. I lifted it out, stuck a bit of old plastic bag under where the bent bit contacts the metal on the PC case and screwed it back in. That fixed it.

Cheers for that.

Well I've ruled out the monitor, drivers, and the trusty old "twatting it with a hammer" isn't working either.

Are you getting any "bleeps" when you reboot?
Happened to me a few times and I've just re-seated the graphics card and it's been fine.

Yea it boots fine ... can run it safe mode ... have re-seated the card n all (took the opportunity to do so when I just took the side off to clear out any dust) .. I'm wondering if the card is overheating .. and the nvidia drivers are telling the card to 'shut down' ... which of course wont happen in safe-mode. That sound feasible to anyone?

is it a dell by any chance?

open it up and look on the motherboard at the little capacitors - if they are domed on top your motherboard is fucked. Dell will replace this free of charge on some models, thats why I ask if its Dell.

Mine did something similar for a few weeks before it died completely, my advice to you is back the fucker up now - or go get a health check on it.

Turned out my mother board was on its way out

go get a health check on it.

PC World healthcheck = 50 quid fee to sell you RAM you could get from Crucial for half the price. Without the fee.

I was just looking at crucial. I need to get some more RAM for my laptop, but Im scared to follow the installation and start taking my keyboard apart like it tells you to!!

Have you got a geeky mate there that will fit it?

It should be straightforward depending on how old your PC is.

Nah it isn't a Dell .. and I hope it isnt a motherboard problem as I could well & truly do without the hassle

The memory I got from Crucial didn't work. They couldn't tell my why either, so I'm sending it back for a replacement.
